UNIT & LESSON PLANS
Authentic Task - Letter to the Premier Project
File Size: | 30 kb |
File Type: | docx |
This unit plan was developed by Dayle Emond for a Science 9 course; however, it has a strong social
science component and could be taught in a Social Science course as well. It requires students to
look into potential energy sources in Saskatchewan, argue in debate form for the merits of a
pecific energy source, and finally, write a persuasive letter to the Premier describing which energy
source, or combination of energy sources, Saskatchewan should pursue to become more
environmentally sustainable and independent.

Many of these resources are science-related so a teacher can look through and get ideas about what
can be taught in class, or even implemented into a non-science class.

ABORIGINAL LAND PLANNING IN CANADA: The Role of Strategic Environmental Assessment in Adaptive Co-management

"Aboriginal Land Planning in Canada: The Role of Strategic Environmental Assessment in Adaptive Co-Management" is
a document that demonstrates Aboriginal participation with federal and provincial environmental assessment. It is a
long document for high school students to read, but it would be a great teacher resource for comparing Aboriginal
knowledge to scientific knowledge, but also has case studies from Saskatchewan as well.

The Digital Media Project
Digital Media Project: Youth Making Place http://www.seri.usask.ca/research/digital-media-project.php
The Digital Media Project: Youth Making Place is based in Saskatoon and has been
running for a number of years. Besides helping students develop their digital
media skills, the organization has found ways for students to think critically
about their local and global communities. Their main research question is "what
impacts do diverse youth relationships with places have on their perspectives
and learning regarding environmental sustainability, and what are the
implications for environment-related education?" The Digital Media Project has
it's own curriculum that could be adapted for any teacher in any classroom. (The
DMP could be a possible project you can do as a class for the school!)
Sustainable and environmental issues range from water pollution to Aboriginal
treaties to homelessness in Saskatoon.
To see some more examples of the projects students have produced in the past, please follow this

documentary: David Suzuki's Andean Adventure

Who would have imagined that some of the boldest and freshest thinking tackling major global issues would come from two little countries in South America? From Ecaudor comes a revolutionary proposal to NOT dig for oil. Below what may be the most biodiverse place on Earth lie oil deposits worth billions of dollars. But, Ecaudor has promised the worth that with some help, it will leave that oil in the ground, to combat climate change, for the good of nature and humanity.
Over in Bolivia, the country is embarking on a high-stakes gamble to develop the Earth's largest reserves of lithium. The plan is that in a few years Bolivia will produce tons of lithium for the growing electric car market as well as the lithium batteries to power the electric cars. This is a great video to demonstrate how countries are taking initiative to promote sustainable development. There are new and fresh ideas that suggest alternatives to make money other than allowing big corporations taking over natural resources. |
