READINGS, ARTICLES & OTHER RESOURCES
"The Long Haul" is a blog made by a Ph.D. candidate in sociology at the University of California. The syllabus and teacher resources she used are all on her blog. She also has a separate page for just environmental justice issues that would be helpful to all. Although she is teaching university level, I am sure some of the ideas can be adapted for high school students as well.

This article defines what enviroracism is.
Mostly based in Ontario, so it is a Canadian connection.
Political issues and documents such as the Indian Act are also touched on.

This article is also about politics, racism, and the environment.
Examples of enviroracism are given, but again, they are all out east in Ontario and Labrador.
Maybe not an article for high-school because it is very long and wordy, and in essay format.

"Faces of Environmentalism Racism: Confronting Issues of Global Justice" by Bill Lawson
Racial minorities in the United States are disproportionately exposed to toxic wastes and other environmental hazards, and cleanup efforts in their communities are slower and less thorough than efforts elsewhere. Internationally, wealthy countries of the North increasingly ship hazardous wastes to poorer countries of the South, resulting in such tragedies as the disaster at Bhopal. Through case studies that highlight the type of information that is seldom reported in the news, Faces of Environmental Racism exposes the type and magnitude of environmental racism, both domestic and international. The essays explore the justice of current environmental practices, asking such questions as whether
cost-benefit analysis is an appropriate analytic technique and whether there are alternate routes to sustainable development in the South. The second edition of this unique volume further explores the ongoing problem of environmental racism.

"Fracking", or Hydraulic Fracturing, is a new technology that has opened up immense resources of
natural gas buried in deep shale beds. The process involves injection of highly-pressurized water,
sand and chemicals to shatter underground layers of shale and extract previously inaccessible natural
gas.
But the process and its sudden spread across the North American landscape, has become an incredibly
divisive issue, ripping apart communities and even families. The backlash to the has industry is
unprecedented, with some countries, Canadian provinces and American states adopting fracking bans
and moratoriums.
